The Queen Of My Dreams12A

Directed by Fawzia Mirza | Canada/Pakistan | 2023 | 1h 39m | Urdu w/ English subtitles | Starring Amrit Kaur, Hamza Haq, Nimra Bucha, Emerson MacNeil, Charlie Boyle

In 1999 Toronto, queer Muslim grad student Azra leads a life far removed from her strictly religious mother in Pakistan. But when her father unexpectedly passes away, Azra returns to her homeland, where she is transported—through Bollywood-inspired flashbacks—to 1960s Karachi. There, she discovers her mother’s untamed youth during a more liberal time in Pakistani history. Fawzia Mirza’s vibrant time-hopping comedy drama brilliantly explores the tension between personal desires and cultural expectations.

Reviews

‘This peppy first feature by Fawzia Mirza has a boisterous energy and toe-tapping use of music’
Wendy Ide, The Observer

‘It’s Mirza’s personal connection to the story that makes it charming, moving, and magnetic in its best moments. To that end, the film accurately reflects the tumult of mothers and daughters and intergenerational culture gaps.’
Proma Khosla, IndieWire
