Camp Miasma Double Feature

Ahead of Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma arriving at UPP, we’re tracing two of its unlikeliest bloodlines: the slasher that launched a thousand sequels, and the Hollywood classic that got there first with the knives out for fame itself. Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard and Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th make for unsual bedfellows on paper, so join us and Dr Mitch Goodrum as we dig into how Schoenbrun’s film talks back to them.

“Excited about Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma? We are! In this double bill ahead of the film arriving at UPP, we set the scene with two sources of inspiration: the original summer camp slasher and Billy Wilder’s psychosexual drama about a fading star entering into a coercive relationship with a young filmmaker. Camp Miasma establishes a playful, referential, relationship with both films (and more besides) – their themes, their iconography, but also their status as films. In this double bill, we put these unlikely bedfellows together to encourage this engagement: to think through how a cynical ‘slash and grab’ after the phenomenal success of Halloween (1978), and a film routinely regarded as one of the best of all time, might profitably talk to each other, and to us.” – Dr Mitch Goodrum
