The Great Escaper12A

Directed by Oliver Parker | UK | 2022 | 1h 36m | Starring Michael Caine, Glenda Jackson, John Standing, Wolf Kahler, Danielle Vitalis

In the summer of 2014, British WWII veteran Bernie Jordan is determined to attend the commemorations for the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy. Defying the advice of his caregivers, he stages a daring “great escape” from his care home and embarks on a journey to northern France. Along the way, Bernie meets other veterans, and they reminisce about their experiences during the Second World War. With a bittersweet script and heartfelt performances, this heartwarming drama stars acting royalty Sir Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson, in her final ever role.

Reviews

‘Caine and Jackson and their ineffable class give this film some real grit: it’s a wonderful last hurrah for Jackson and there is something moving and even awe-inspiring in seeing these two British icons together.’
★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘An unassuming tale about autumnal dignity and the quiet compensations of lifelong companionship.’
★★★★
Kevin Maher, The Times
