Screen Cuba presents: Memories of UnderdevelopmentCert-TBC

Directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea | Cuba | 1968 | 1h 37m | Spanish w/ English subtitles | Starring Sergio Corrieri, Daisy Granados, Eslinda Núñez, Omar Valdés, René de la Cruz

After the Bay of Pigs Invasion, a wealthy writer remains in Cuba while his wife and family flee to Miami. As he drifts through the streets of Havana, his romantic entanglements and political indifference slowly give way to a deepening sense of alienation. Combining fragmented storytelling with documentary footage and still photography, this richly layered drama offers a striking portrait of life in post-revolutionary Cuba.

Reviews

‘Conjures up the uncertain mood of Havana just after the revolution…The effect is fascinating. This is a must-see.’
