Happy 50th PPP: Winstanley on 35mm FilmPG
Winstanley holds a special place in our history: it was the very first film screened at the Penultimate Picture Palace when we opened 50 years ago on 18th July 1976. To celebrate this special milestone, we’re taking it right back to where it all began with a screening of Winstanley – the very first film ever shown here – presented in glorious 35mm.
Includes introduction by UPP’s Executive Director Micaela Tuckwell, and a short talk by local historian Liz Woolley on the UPP during the 1970s.
☕ Plus, enjoy free tea and coffee as we celebrate together.
In mid-17th century England, poverty and unrest are spreading. In response, a group known as the Diggers forms a commune, asserting their right to cultivate and share the wealth of the common land. Led by Gerrard Winstanley, they are met with fierce hostility from landowners and government troops. The film is remarkable for its authenticity. Much of the dialogue is drawn directly from Winstanley’s own pamphlets, armour was borrowed from the Tower of London, and the crew included more real-life activists than professional actors, even the animals were sourced from rare heritage breeds.

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road.We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We only show a few adverts – less than most cinemas – and we only play a couple of trailers, so please don’t be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
