FitzcarraldoPG

Directed by Werner Herzog | Peru/West Germany | 1982 | 2h 38m | Starring Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale, José Lewgoy, Peter Berling, Grande Otelo

An Irish fortune hunter dreams of constructing an opera house in a secluded trading post within the Peruvian jungle. To secure the necessary funds, he ventures into the wilderness to tap into the wealth of the previously unexplored rubber territory. When the expedition encounters difficulties, the only viable solution is to haul their 300-ton steamboat over a mountainside. Renowned for its troubled production and real on-set struggles mirroring those depicted in the film, Herzog’s frenzied tale of capitalist obsession stands out as one of his most acclaimed and audacious works.

Winner of Best Director at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival.

Reviews

‘As a document of a quest and a dream, and as the record of man’s audacity and foolish, visionary heroism, there has never been another movie like it.’
