The Long Goodbye18

Directed by Robert Altman | USA | 1973 | 1h 52m | Starring Elliott Gould, Nina van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, Mark Rydell, Henry Gibson

In 1970s Los Angeles, a private detective finds himself ensnared in a complex web of mystery and deceit while investigating the murder of a friend. Navigating the dark underbelly of the city, he encounters corrupt police officers, faded Hollywood starlets, and enigmatic gangsters. With each step deeper into the case, his own life becomes increasingly jeopardised. Robert Altman’s distinctive neo-noir film subverts the traditional detective genre by skilfully blending elements of satire and black comedy, enhanced by stylish cinematography and a standout performance by Elliott Gould.

★★★★★
Alan Jones, Radio Times

‘A masterpiece of sorts, it digs beneath the surface of the supposedly liberated spirit of the times to expose the ethos that took America into the Vietnam war and produced Watergate.’
Philip French, The Guardian
