The Shop Around the Corner - The Ultimate Picture Palace

The Shop Around the CornerPG

Directed by Ernst Lubitsch | USA | 1940 | 1h 39m | Starring James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan, Frank Morgan

In a Budapest gift shop in the run-up to Christmas, two colleagues who cannot stand each other are both searching for romance. They soon find themselves falling in love with their own anonymous pen-pals, without realising they are in fact in correspondence with each other. Deftly directed by Ernst Lubitsch from a smart script, this is a romantic comedy in the finest sense of the term and perfect seasonal fare.

Reviews

‘Close to perfection–one of the most beautifully acted and paced romantic comedies ever made in this country.’
Pauline Kael, The New Yorker

‘Twice remade, Lubitsch’s 1940 original, set in Budapest, is the real thing. One of the greatest romantic comedies’
Philip French, The Guardian
