The Other Way Around12A

Directed by Jonás Trueba | Spain | 2024 | 1h 54m | Spanish w/ English subtitles | Starring Vito Sanz, Itsaso Arana, Fernando Trueba, Andrés Gertrúdix, Jon Viar

After 14 years together, film-loving couple Ale and Alex decide to end their relationship. Determined to part on good terms, they throw a celebratory party for friends and family. But their idealistic plan quickly unravels, revealing that breakups are rarely as simple (or cinematic) as they seem. Jonás Trueba gives the romantic comedy a fresh, stylish spin in this bittersweet, award-winning tale of love, closure, and the messiness in between.

Reviews

‘This is a fresh and often moving take on the evaporation of intimacy in long-term relationships and how formative family life can linger, often unhelpfully, in adult love.’
★★★★
Kevin Maher, The Times

‘In posing substantive questions about the nature of romance and relationships, it’s smarter than virtually any American studio romantic comedy of recent years.’
★★★★
Adam Solomons, IndieWire
