Sorcery15

Directed by Christopher Murray | Chile/Mexico | 2023 | 1h 41m | Spanish w/ English subtitles | Starring Valentina Véliz Caileo, Daniel Antivilo, Sebastian Hülk, Daniel Muñoz, José Aburto

In the late 19th century, on a remote Chilean island, an Indigenous girl named Rosa lives and works with her father on a farm. When the foreman viciously attacks her father, Rosa seeks justice by turning to the king of a powerful sorcerers’ organisation. This darkly atmospheric fable, inspired by real events, tells a tale of anti-colonial revenge and self-discovery, deeply rooted in ancient folklore.

Reviews

‘On the surface, “Sorcery” is a revenge film about a girl’s desire for vengeance, but below the surface is a gorgeous showcase of misunderstood Indigenous traditions and beliefs.’
★★★★
Charles Barfield, The Playlist

‘Christopher Murray’s film sees revenge as a small part of a far greater, more interesting story of an island girl’s self-discovery.’
Leila Latif, BFI Sight & Sound Magazine
