Distant Voices, Still Lives (35mm Presentation)15

Directed by Terence Davies | UK | 1988 | 1h 24m | Starring Pete Postlethwaite, Freda Dowie, Angela Walsh, Dean Williams, Lorraine Ashbourne

Set in a world before Elvis, and Liverpool before the Beatles, a working class family come together for a wedding. It is a joyous occasion, but through flashbacks it becomes clear that the family was not always as happy. Late great Terence Davies’ poetic semi-autobiographical evocation of life growing up in post-war Liverpool is rightfully regarded as one of the greatest British films of the last 50 years.

Both screenings will be presented on 35mm film.

Reviews

‘For all the formal technique and the theatrically controlled tableaux, the drama is vividly present and alive.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘Davies is unflinching in his hunt for truth and full of nothing but love and understanding for his characters.’
★★★★★
