Nina, a dedicated obstetrician, works in the only small hospital in a remote Georgian town, where she is deeply committed to her patients. But when a newborn dies shortly after delivery, her competence is suddenly called into question. The scrutiny intensifies as whispers spread, accusing her of performing illegal abortions. In this powerful drama, Georgian filmmaker Dea Kulumbegashvili follows up her acclaimed debut Beginning with an exploration of bodily autonomy and the fragile social standing of a determined woman in an isolated community.
Reviews
‘The high arthouse influences are still detectable, but Kulumbegashvili has mastered and absorbed them and has an evolving film-language of her own.’
★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
‘There is so much rugged poetry contained in this film, and yet the palpable, gnawing horror is what sees it through.’
★★★★

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road. We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We don’t show adverts, just a couple of trailers, so don't be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
