Alcarràs15

Directed by Carla Simón | Spain | 2022 | 2h | Catalan w/ English subtitles | Starring Josep Abad, Jordi Pujol Dolcet, Anna Otin, Albert Bosch, Xènia Roset

In a small Catalonian village, a family of peach farmers spend every summer together in their orchard. But when they find out about the landowner’s plan to replace the peach trees with solar panels, they face losing their home as well as their livelihood. Deftly switching between various characters’ points of view and drawing upon her own past, Carla Simón’s moving multigenerational story of a family fighting against the tides of change won the Golden Bear (Best Film) at last year’s Berlin FIlm Festival.

Reviews

‘Carla Simón’s superb film about a farm in decline is proof that fiction is sometimes the most powerful way to uncover the truth.’
★★★★★
Tim Robey, The Telegraph

‘Persuasively lived-in performances… give the Catalan-language picture both its urgent naturalism and its potent sense of anger and injustice.’
★★★★
Wendy Ide, The Observer
