Aguirre, Wrath of GodPG

Directed by Werner Herzog | Mexico/West Germany | 1972 | 1h 34m | German w/ English subtitles | Starring Klaus Kinski, Ruy Guerra, Helena Rojo, Cecilia Rivera, Peter Berling

In the 16th century, deep within the forests of Peru, a group of Spanish conquistadors trek through the wilderness in pursuit of the legendary El Dorado. Guided by their megalomaniacal leader Don Lope de Aguirre, they traverse the Amazon River, plunging into uncharted territory and descending into unimaginable madness. Filmed entirely on location in the jungle, this early masterpiece from renowned German director Werner Herzog ambitiously tells an unforgettable tale of greed, ambition, and the destructive force of nature.

Reviews

‘The powerful and near demonic screen presence of Klaus Kinski, combined with the very real danger of the nature that surrounds him and Herzog’s gift for making every shot count, is quite remarkable.’
★★★★★
Almar Haflidason, BBC

‘It looks more magnificent and mad than ever, one of the great folies de grandeur of 1970s cinema, an expeditionary Conradian nightmare like Coppola’s Apocalypse Now.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
