Sátántangó18

Directed by Béla Tarr | Hungary | 1994 | 7h 19m (+ 2 intermissions) | Hungarian w/ English subtitles | Starring Mihály Vig, Putyi Horváth, László feLugossy, Éva Almássy Albert, János Derzsi

Residents of a small Hungarian village grapple with the aftermath of Communism’s collapse. With the local factory closed, villagers await a promised cash payout following the shutdown. Amidst this, a villager previously believed to be dead returns and convinces the locals to form a commune. Voted one of the 100 greatest films of all time in the recent BFI Sight & Sound poll, Béla Tarr’s legendary seven-and-a-half-hour masterpiece is a mesmerising exploration of domestic and social decay in post-Communist Europe.

This one-off screening includes two intermissions (see schedule below). Tea, coffee and pastries will be available from 9.30am, and we will also be handing out 15% discount vouchers for food at the Big Society pub next door, so you can refuel during one of the breaks. Please feel free to bring your own pillows or cushions for extra comfort. We will also give away souvenir badges to all attendees who make it to the very end!
