American Fiction15

Directed by Cord Jefferson | USA | 2023 | 1h 57m | Starring Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams

A renowned author and literature professor, disillusioned with the establishment’s exploitation of “Black” entertainment steeped in worn-out and offensive tropes, takes matters into his own hands. To illustrate his frustration, he adopts a pen name and writes an audacious “Black” book of his own. Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut, adapted from Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, unfolds as a wildly entertaining satire addressing the commodification of marginalised voices.

Winner of Best Adapted Screening at this year’s Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards.

Reviews

‘This is satire at its best, a film full of tremendous laughs and salient observations on racial stereotyping.’
★★★★
Kaleem Aftab, BBC

‘In “American Fiction,” the comic and tragic go hand in hand. Each moment is layered with meaning, socially, politically, and emotionally…a breath of fresh air’
★★★★
Jourdain Searles, IndieWire
