Willy Wonka & the Chocolate FactoryU

Directed by Mel Stuart | USA | 1971 | 1h 40m | Starring Gene Wilder, Peter Ostrum, Jack Albertson, Roy Kinnear, Julie Dawn Cole

Poor Charlie Bucket is desperate to win an elusive Golden Ticket for an exclusive tour of Willy Wonka’s legendary chocolate factory. So when he does get his hands on a ticket, he embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet his hero and go on a fantastical adventure. Gene Wilder’s wryly comic performance provides a sharp centre to this sweet family classic based on Roald Dahl’s much loved children’s book.

Reviews

‘Probably the best film of its sort since The Wizard of Oz. It is everything that family movies usually claim to be, but aren’t: Delightful, funny, scary, exciting, and, most of all, a genuine work of imagination.’
★★★★
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

‘Roald Dahl’s immortal, sugar-coated morality play finds Gene Wilder as disturbing and fault-ridden but compelling as the book described.’
★★★★
Ian Nathan, Empire Magazine
