Aftersun12A

Directed by Charlotte Wells | UK | 2022 | 1h 42m | Starring Paul Mescal, Frankie Corio, Celia Rowlson-Hall, Kayleigh Coleman, Sally Messham

In the 1990s, a father and his young daughter go on holiday to a Turkish beach resort. They swim in the ocean, play pool, and cherish the time they spend together. However, an unspoken sadness lurks beneath the surface that threatens to upset their otherwise ideal summer holiday. Charlotte Wells’ revelatory feature debut is a subtle and deeply emotional evocation of a father-daughter relationship, anchored by exquisite performances by Paul Mescal (Normal People) and newcomer Frankie Corio. Nominated for Best Actor the Oscars and winner of Outstanding British Debut at this year’s BAFTAs.

Reviews

“Aftersun” isn’t just an honest movie about the way that we remember the people we’ve lost — fragmented, elusive, nowhere and everywhere all at once — it’s also a heart-stopping act of remembering unto itself.’
★★★★★
David Ehrlich, IndieWire

‘Wells’s movie ripples and shimmers like a swimming pool of mystery; the way Wells captures mood and moment, never labouring the point or forcing the pace, reminded me of the young Lucrecia Martel.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
