We’re incredibly proud to announce that UPP has been shortlisted for the 2026 Cinema of the Year at the prestigious British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). BIFA is an internationally renowned organisation that celebrates, promotes and supports independent film in the UK.
More than 70 cinemas entered the competition, with nearly 50,000 votes cast by cinemagoers across the UK. We received over 1,000 nominations and many plaudits from nominees for our diverse programme, warm community and rich history:
“I love the cinema’s commitment to the celebration of film in all its forms, from blockbusters to international movies to university graduate’s final year work. I love the passion, enthusiasm and commitment of the managers. I love the history of the cinema as one of the oldest still in existence in Britain.”
“The UPP is a beautiful, lovingly cared for cinema at the heart of the East Oxford community. It is truly independent and the experience of watching a wonderfully curated array of films there is a real pleasure that never stops being a treat. The UPP is a gem that must continue to be protected and preserved for all to enjoy for many years to come.”
Despite overwhelming support, we’re currently facing an uncertain future. Our landlord, Oriel College Oxford, is currently unwilling to commit to our long-term future in the building which was created as a cinema in 1911. We need to modernise the interior, including improved access, sightlines and sound system. But the current lease, which expires in 2037, is too short to secure funding for the works. More than 24,000 people have signed a petition calling on Oriel to Save the UPP, and we’re currently in positive talks with Oriel about the way forward.
Chair of the UPP, Alastair Phillips said: “This proves how important the Ultimate Picture Palace is, not just to our large and diverse Oxford audience but to the whole nation. We genuinely hope to secure the future of this very special cinema in the home which was built for it, for generations to come.”
The winning cinema will be revealed at the BIFA ceremony on Sunday 6th December.
