A Night of Art, Memory and Solidarity for Colombian Artists After the Earthquake
Special Zona Sur Cinema Club Evening at the Ultimate Picture Palace

Join us for a special evening dedicated to Magdalenas por el Cauca, an artistic and community project from Pereira, Colombia. The project combines cinema, painting, performance and public art along the Cauca River. Its aim: to honour the memory of people killed or forcibly disappeared during Colombia’s armed conflict, especially the women and families still searching for their loved ones.

For many years, artists Yorlady Ruiz and Gabriel Posada have worked with communities along the Cauca and Magdalena Rivers. Their work has helped transform the river from a place of violence and loss into a space for remembrance. It shows how art can preserve collective memory and support reconciliation.

This fundraiser evening, hosted by Zona Sur Cinema Club, includes:

  • A screening of Magdalenas por el Cauca
  • A conversation moderated by Lorena Briscoe, with guest Andrei Gómez-Suárez, a former peace negotiator and Associate Researcher at SOAS University of London
  • A fundraiser in solidarity with Yorlady Ruiz and Gabriel Posada, whose home and workspace were destroyed in a recent earthquake

Donations will help:

  • Recover and preserve surviving artworks and documents
  • Relocate and safeguard their archive
  • Rebuild a safe workspace so they can continue their artistic and community work

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road.We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We only show a few adverts – less than most cinemas – and we only play a couple of trailers, so please don’t be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
