The Virgin Suicides15

Directed by Sofia Coppola | USA | 1999 | 1h 37m | Starring Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods, Kathleen Turner, Danny DeVito

Trapped in a stifling suburban existence, the young students and adolescents of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, are always searching for a way to escape. The only bright spot for the town’s teenage boys are the enigmatic Lisbon sisters. However, the lives of the sisters and the neighbourhood around them soon becomes entwined with tragedy. In her dreamlike debut, Sofia Coppola creates a poignant reflection on the fragility of youth and the scars left by unspoken secrets.

Reviews

‘[Coppola] has the courage to play it in a minor key. She doesn’t hammer home ideas and interpretations. She is content with the air of mystery and loss that hangs in the air like bitter poignancy.’
★★★★
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

‘An always impressive tale of teenage insecurity, deprivation, angst, and lust.’
★★★★
Michael Thomson, BBC
