The First Slam Dunk12A

Directed by Takehiko Inoue | Japan | 2023 | 2h 5m | Japanese w/ English & Chinese subtitles | Starring Yoshiaki Hasegawa, Katsuhisa Hôki, Tetsu Inada, Ryota Iwasaki, Shinichiro Kamio

Short, scrappy and quick-tempered, Ryota is not a typical fit for basketball greatness. But as he and his Shohoku High School teammates prepare to face the reportedly unbeatable Sannoh Industry, their personal worlds collide on the court. Written and directed by the creator of the original Slam Dunk manga, and featuring hybrid CGI and hand-drawn animation, The First Slam Dunk combines a powerfully moving narrative with exhilarating action. Winner of the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.

Reviews

‘As thrilling as any real game. Like the title says: a total slam dunk.’
★★★★
Esther Rosenfield, Little White Lies

‘No movie has so literally reduced basketball to “just a game,” and no movie this side of Hoop Dreams has so ecstatically conveyed why it’s also so much more than that.’
★★★★
David Ehrlich, IndieWire

Plan your visit

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road. We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We don’t show adverts, just a couple of trailers, so don't be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
