The Delinquents12A

Directed by Rodrigo Moreno | Argentina | 2023 | 3h 10m | Spanish w/ English subtitles | Starring Daniel Elías, Esteban Bigliardi, Margarita Molfino, Germán De Silva, Mariana Chaud

A weary bank clerk hatches an intriguing scheme to make enough money to retire, involving stealing money from his employer and confessing to the crime. While doing a short stint in jail, a colleague will look after the spoils in a remote location with the promise of a 50/50 split. Argentina’s official entry for the 2024 Academy Awards, writer-director Rodrigo Moreno’s captivating and entirely unpredictable crime-drama unfolds as a farcical multi-layered comedy about greed and desire.

Reviews

‘If Pedro Almodóvar and Eric Rohmer teamed up to compose a meanderingly long heist movie it might look like this, but something in the film’s waywardness makes it very difficult to fit into the heist genre – or any genre.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘The Delinquents alternatingly dares the viewer to read it as a caper flick, a moral parable, a comedy of coincidences, and an existential probe.’
★★★★
Pat Brown, Slant Magazine
