The Dead Don’t Hurt15

Directed by Viggo Mortensen | USA | 2023 | 2h 9m | Starring Vicky Krieps, Viggo Mortensen, Solly McLeod, Garret Dillahunt, Danny Huston

In the 1860s, on the western frontier of the United States, Vivienne, a fiercely independent French-Canadian woman, falls in love with a Danish immigrant named Holger. They move to a quiet town in Nevada to start a new life together. However, with the outbreak of the Civil War, Holger chooses to join the Union army, leaving Vivienne to face the dangers of frontier life alone. When Holger returns from the war, he and Vivienne must confront and reconcile with the changes in each other. Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) stars alongside director Viggo Mortensen in this feminist neo-Western exploring the conflict between revenge and forgiveness.

Reviews

‘The time-jumping is Mortensen’s masterstroke and it confers a wrenching sadness on the relationship between Vivienne and Holger, even in the most open and ingenuous stages of their love.’
★★★★
Kevin Maher, The Times

‘The languid pacing and fractured, nonlinear structure chime with Mortensen’s arthouse sensibilities, rather than the more traditional view of what a frontier adventure should look like.’
★★★★
Wendy Ide, The Observer
