The Cremator15

Directed by Juraj Herz | Czechoslovakia | 1969 | 1h 40m | Czech w/ English subtitles | Starring Rudolf Hrusínský, Vlasta Chramostová, Jana Stehnová, Milos Vognic, Zora Bozinová

In 1930s Prague, a crematorium manager becomes obsessed with the idea that death is the only true escape from human suffering. When the Nazis recruit him, his warped beliefs spiral into madness, leading him to devise his own chilling “final solution.” Czechoslovak New Wave visionary Juraj Herz blends surrealist horror, expressionist political allegory, and dark satire in this haunting portrait of fascist terror.

Our screening on Sunday 11th May features an in-person introduction by Ally Pitts, host of A Russian & Soviet Movie Podcast (since 2017).
