The Testament Of Ann Lee15

Directed by Mona Fastvold | USA | 2024 | 2h 17m | Starring Amanda Seyfried, Lewis Pullman, Thomasin McKenzie, Christopher Abbott, Tim Blake Nelson

From award-winning writer-director Mona Fastvold (The Brutalist) comes a powerful retelling of the life of Ann Lee, one of the most influential religious figures in pre-Revolutionary America. Born into poverty in Manchester, England, Lee emigrated to America in 1774, where she became the founder and spiritual leader of the Shaker Movement. The film brings to life both the triumphs and struggles of Lee’s quest to create a utopian community. In this sweeping musical historical epic, Amanda Seyfried delivers a nuanced performance, capturing the complexity and conviction of a woman whose vision reshaped the lives of those around her.

Reviews

‘Fastvold is willing to take her material over the top. But it belongs there, and at a moment when so many big-ticket movies feel earthbound, The Testament of Ann Lee deserves credit for at least trying to defy gravity.’
Adam Nayman, Toronto Star
