The Brutalist18

Directed by Brady Corbet | USA | 2024 | 3h 35m (inc. 15 min intermission) | Starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy

Fleeing post-war Europe in 1947, Hungarian-Jewish architect László arrives in America seeking to rebuild his shattered life, career, and marriage. Alone in an unfamiliar land, he settles in Pennsylvania, where a wealthy industrialist recognises his talent and commissions him to design an ambitious, monumental project. As László pours himself into his work, the creative process begins to demand an ever-greater toll, pushing him to sacrifice pieces of himself to fulfil his uncompromising vision. Told with breathtaking grandeur and sweeping novelistic depth, Brady Corbet’s award-winning epic is a powerful exploration of the immigrant experience, delving into the intricate ties between capitalism, power, trauma, and the cost of artistic ambition. Screenings include a 15 minute intermission.

🏆 Nominated for 10 Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director) and winner of 4 BAFTA Film Awards (including Best Director and Best Lead Actor).

Reviews

‘The performances are savagely good, with Pearce and Brody both on awards season form. And it’s shot on rarely seen 70mm film stock, which means that it looks like something beautiful, haunting and strange, but always from the long-forgotten past.’
★★★★★
Kevin Maher, The Times

‘As a state-of-the-US historical epic, it boasts all the thematic heft of Once Upon a Time in America or There Will Be Blood. But it’s also acted with the colour and fizz of a classical Hollywood comic drama.’
★★★★★
Robbie Collin, The Telegraph
