Rumours15

Directed by Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson & Guy Maddin | Canada | 2024 | 1h 44m | Starring Cate Blanchett, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, Alicia Vikander, Nikki Amuka-Bird

At the annual G7 summit, leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies convene to draft a provisional response to a global crisis. So consumed by their work, they fail to notice that they’ve been left alone—just as ominous signs of an impending apocalypse emerge. This genre-bending satire explores political incompetence, delving into the absurd core of power and the collapse of a failing global political order.

Reviews

‘This triumphantly stupid ensemble comedy… casts the G7 leadership adrift in a B-movie, essentially turning the heads of the leading liberal first-world democracies into the Mystery Machine gang from Scooby-Doo.’
★★★★★
Robbie Collin, The Telegraph

‘With the age of globalism seemingly creaking to a close, there is something wildly mordant about Rumours — a portrait of the last technocrats, still talking bilateral supply chain management as the skies crack open.’
★★★★
Danny Leigh, The FT
