Passages18

Directed by Ira Sachs | France/Germany | 2023 | 1h 32m | Starring Franz Rogowski, Ben Whishaw, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Erwan Kepoa Falé, Arcadi Radeff

Tomas and Martin, a gay couple living in Paris, find their marriage in turmoil when Tomas spontaneously embarks on a passionate affair with a young woman. As the dynamics shift, Martin also enters into an extramarital liaison, rekindling his partner’s focus while uncovering Tomas’ jealous side. Enriched by Franz Rogowski’s remarkable central performance, Ira Sachs’s (Little Men) exploration of an uneasy love triangle is both edgy and sensual, yet humorous and playful.

Reviews

‘As often in his [Ira Sachs] films, bourgeois comfort is a façade; resentment’s a cauldron; and the practical setup of people’s lives is in danger of gazumping their destinies.’
★★★★
Tim Robey, The Telegraph

‘Rogowski’s combustible presence supercharges the proceedings and, in all, it’s one of Sachs’ most fully-realised and psychologically perceptive works.’
★★★★
David Jenkins, Little White Lies
