Born into Corsican nobility, Napoleon Bonaparte ascended through the ranks of the French army, emerging as one of Europe’s most accomplished military commanders and ultimately securing the title of Emperor of France. From the battles which catapulted him to fame to his turbulent marriage to Josephine, Ridley Scott’s sweeping historical epic offers a glimpse into the psyche of one of the most controversial figures in European history.

Reviews

‘Joaquin Phoenix makes a magnificent emperor in thrilling biopic. Ridley Scott dispenses with the symbolic weight attached to previous biopics in favour of a spectacle with a great star at its centre.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘As entertainment Napoleon delivers without glorifying his military record or painting the man as a hero. It’s a story about power, obsession and exploitation — which arguably is the story of history itself’
★★★★
Hannah Strong, Little White Lies
