Magnolia18

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson | USA | 1999 | 3h 8m | Starring Julianne Moore, Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, John C. Reilly

Set against the backdrop of a single day in the San Fernando Valley, an ensemble of seemingly disconnected lives becomes intricately intertwined. A dying father, a young wife, a devoted caretaker, a love-struck police officer, a child prodigy, a game show host, and an estranged daughter each navigate their own quests for love, forgiveness, and meaning. In his highly ambitious third feature, acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood) weaves an epic mosaic of interlinked stories, creating a deeply moving exploration of the human experience.

Reviews

‘Magnolia is operatic in its ambition, a great, joyous leap into melodrama and coincidence, with ragged emotions, crimes and punishments, deathbed scenes, romantic dreams, generational turmoil and celestial intervention, all scored to insistent music.’
★★★★★
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

‘A sensational piece of moviemaking — a wild folly dripping with a sour nectar of cinematic bravado.’
Roger Clarke, The Independent
