Leonor Will Never Die15

Directed by Martika Ramirez Escobar | The Philippines | 2022 | 1h 39m | Filipino w/ English subtitles | Starring Sheila Francisco, Bong Cabrera, Rocky Salumbides, Anthony Falcon, Rea Molina

Retired filmmaker Leonor is about to start work on a new script when she is knocked unconscious by a falling television. Waking up in a dreamworld much like the macho movies she used to direct, Leonor is compelled to become the hero of her own unfinished screenplay. A surreal comedy is all at once a tribute to retro Filipino action movies, a charming portrait of a compulsive artist, and a reminder of the limitless possibilities of cinema. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Sundance.

Reviews

‘In a film steeped in loss and grief, Leonor Will Never Die, as the title implies, is ultimately a beautiful, life-affirming celebration of the power of film and art to heal. Yes, even ‘80s action films.’
