Last Year in MarienbadU

Directed by Alain Resnais | France | 1961 | 1h 33m | French w/ English subtitles | Starring Delphine Seyrig, Giorgio Albertazzi, Sacha Pitoëff, Françoise Bertin, Luce Garcia-Ville

In a quiet Bohemian castle that has been converted into a hotel, silence dominates. Guests have come to rest, and, aside from a few hushed exchanges, noise is strictly forbidden. When one guest becomes infatuated with a young woman, he insists that they have met before and tries to convince her of a shared past. With its elegant, gliding camera movements and its unsettling treatment of time, where past and present appear to merge, Alain Resnais’s Last Year at Marienbad is not only a defining work of the French New Wave, but also one of the most enduring achievements of modern art.
