When Kawabe Ichiko accepts her boyfriend Hasegawa’s marriage proposal, everything seems perfect. But the next day, Ichiko vanishes without a trace. Desperate, Hasegawa contacts the police—only to discover that there is no record of Ichiko ever existing. Who is she, and where has she gone? As Hasegawa digs into her past, he uncovers a series of heartbreaking revelations about Ichiko’s life, exposing the extent of her suffering. Adapted from director Toda Akihiro’s acclaimed stage play, Ichiko is a powerful exploration of poverty, abuse, and the flaws in Japan’s family register system.
