Gentle, Angry Women + Q&A12A

Directed by Barbara Santi | UK | 2025 | 1h 3m + 30m Q&A

Unaware of the longest female-led protest in British history, a new generation of young female activists is standing up to fight for the issues of their time. Barbara Santi’s documentary follows Poppy (16), Xanthe (17), and Evie (19) as they discover the overlooked story of the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, where thousands of women lived for 19 years in protest against nuclear missiles.

As they retrace the original 110-mile march to Greenham, the three young activists connect with the women who came before them. Through this intergenerational exchange, they explore what activism means today, confront the renewed threat of British nuclear armament, and reflect on their own identities and beliefs. Gentle, Angry Women is a moving and timely documentary about memory, resistance, and the enduring power of feminist activism.

International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament screening followed by a Q&A with peace activists Marie Walsh, Nuala Young, and Di McDonald.

Our speakers:

Marie Walsh is a local peace activist who has twice been arrested for being part of recent blockades at the gates of USAF (RAF) Lakenheath airbase.

Nuala Young, a peace activist, was at Greenham, and since goes regularly to Aldermaston Women’s Camp, set up in 1984 outside AWE Aldermarston, which runs on one weekend-only every month.

Di McDonald has worked in communties from Adventure Playgrounds in Oxford to Greenham Common. After Cruisewatch and the INF Treaty banning Cruise, Di moved on with Polariswatch, Sea Action, Nukewatch and other successful groups before starting the Nuclear information Service in 2000.”
