Deaf12A

Directed by Eva Libertad | Spain | 2025 | 1h 40m | Spanish with English subtitles | Starring Miriam Garlo, Álvaro Cervantes, Elena Irureta, Joaquín Notario, Erika Rubia

Ángela, a deaf woman working in a rural Spanish pottery studio, is expecting a child with her hearing partner, Héctor. As her pregnancy progresses, she grapples with fears about motherhood and whether she will be able to fully communicate with her daughter. Haunted by the isolation she has often endured, Ángela is forced to confront deep questions about identity and belonging. Tenderly told and beautifully performed, Eva Libertad’s feature debut reveals a remarkable gift for portraying human stories with honesty and profound emotion.

🏆 Winner of the Panorama Audience Award for Best Feature Film at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Reviews

‘The film becomes a bang-on illustration of how cinema can be an engine for empathy, and certainly viewers won’t need to be deaf themselves to get what Angela is going through.’
★★★★
Leslie Felperin, The Guardian

‘Deaf takes an intimate, incisive look at the all-too common challenges of new parenthood, while presenting circumstances that are fascinatingly specific. Affecting and enlightening, it’s a powerful piece of cinema.’
★★★★
Emma Simmonds, The List
