A young woman survives a drag race accident in a small Kansas town, then takes a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. On the drive there, she’s haunted by a bizarre apparition that draws her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by a team of industrial filmmakers on a tiny budget, Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls aimed for, in his words, the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau. Largely ignored on release, the film found a cult following through late-night television and has gone on to influence generations of horror directors.
