Artist Callout: Film Poster Project

Artist Callout: Film Poster Project

Apr 7, 2021 | News

Are you a local artist/designer with a passion for cinema? If so, we want to work with you on an upcoming project linked to our re-opening in May and beyond!

We are looking to commission 6 artists/graphic designers to each design an original, eye-catching poster for six of our upcoming programmes beginning in May 2021.

These poster campaigns are an important part of our effort to celebrate our reopening and remind local audiences young and old that there is a fantastic world of cinema ready for them to explore at Oxford’s only independent cinema. As such we will be proudly printing each of the posters and distributing them at local cafes, shops and community centres around Cowley Road and Oxford.

Each artist/graphic designer will be asked to design a poster in response to a programme’s lead film, often a new release of a UK or international independent feature film. Where possible, we will arrange for you to see the film beforehand for inspiration. The poster must clearly contain the name of the film, as well as ‘Playing at The Ultimate Picture Palace, Cowley Road, from [specified date]’, other than that, the design is completely up to you! Each of the 6 artists/graphic designers will receive a commission fee of £150 and some UPP goodies (inc. free cinema tickets).

Other information and terms:
• Designs must be submitted digitally (300 dpi resolution)
• Designs must be presented in a vertical format (applicable to A3 poster printing)
• All works and design rights must be original
• The UPP is authorised to use submitted works in advertisement and publications in various formats

Who can apply?
Because we are keen to support local creative talent, as well as provide stepping stones into the creative and cultural sector we are inviting expressions of interest from both new and established visual artists and graphic designers from Oxfordshire. Further, we especially encourage artists from the Global Majority and other under-represented demographics to apply.

How To Apply?
To apply, please email: [email protected] by Wednesday 14th April 2021.

Tell us:
• Your name and address
• About your experience as an artist or graphic designer.
Please include links to an online portfolio/Instagram if you have one or send us a few images of your work.
• Anything else you would like to tell us

The UPP will choose the 6 artists for the commissions. We will let everyone know by Friday 16th April.

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road. We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We don’t show adverts, just a couple of trailers, so don't be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
