Japanese Film Club presents: Linda Linda LindaCert-TBC

Directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita | Japan | 2005 | 1h 54m | Japanese w/ English subtitles | Starring Bae Doona, Aki Maeda, Yû Kashii, Shiori Sekine, Takayo Mimura

When the lead singer of their band quits, high school friends Kei, Kyoko, and Nozomi see their dream of performing at the final high school concert slip away. In a moment of desperation, they recruit the first person they come across: Son, a Korean exchange student (Bae Doona), whose grasp of Japanese is, at best, limited. With just three days to prepare three songs for the school festival’s rock concert, it becomes a race against time as the band pulls together against the odds. Linda Linda Linda is an effervescent, tender-hearted snapshot of youth, capturing the incomparable joy of making music with friends. Featuring songs by iconic Japanese bands The Blue Hearts and Base Ball Bear, with original music by James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins, this beloved classic returns in a stunning new 4K restoration.

Reviews

‘An extremely well-written, emotionally complex coming-of-age tale that has a John Hughesian respect for teenage angst.’
G Allen Johnson, San Fransisco Chronicle
