Driving Mum12A

Directed by Hilmar Oddsson | Iceland | 2022 | 1h 53m | Icelandic w/ English subtitles | Starring Þröstur Leó Gunnarsson, Kristbjörg Kjeld, Hera Hilmar, Tómas Lemarquis, Harpa Arnardóttir

When a middle-aged man’s domineering mother passes away, he is obliged to fulfil her last request: to be laid to rest in her remote hometown of Eyrarbakki. With his mother’s body secured in the backseat of his Ford Cortina and their cherished family dog in tow, they embark on a transformative cross-country journey. Hilmar Oddsson’s darkly comedic road-movie is a captivating odyssey of self-discovery and acceptance set against the stunning landscapes of Iceland.

Reviews

‘Kristbjörg Kjeld is brilliant as the the back seat driver from hell – a disgruntled corpse who occasionally opens her eyes to berate her feckless son. And Þröstur Leó Gunnarsson makes your heart bleed.’
★★★★★
Sarah Kent, The Arts Desk

‘The comic style is reminiscent of Finnish auteur Aki Kaurismaki, especially the deadpan way the film uses music. At the same time, this is very much an Icelandic film, one that celebrates the breathtaking emptiness of the landscape.’
★★★★
Leslie Felperin, The Guardian
