Brother15

Directed by Clement Virgo | Canada | 2023 | 2h | Starring Lamar Johnson, Aaron Pierre, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Kiana Madeira, Orville Cummings.

Growing up in Toronto as the sons of Caribbean immigrants, Francis and Michael share an unbreakable bond. Michael looks up to the older Francis for guidance, but during the summer of 1991, escalating tensions set in motion a series of life-altering events. Clement Virgo’s exquisite adaptation of David Chariandy’s 2017 novel provides a rich and textured narrative about sibling bonds, community resilience, and the enduring power of music.

Reviews

‘Virgo does a great job of confounding our expectations of macho masculinity, finding tenderness, protectiveness and even neediness beneath the street-tough exterior.’
★★★★
Mark Kermode, The Observer

‘Johnson and Pierre suggest decades of fraternal feeling with their soulful performances, while Blake is revelatory as their tough but tender mum.’
★★★★
Kevin Harley, The Times
