Smoking Causes Coughing15

Directed by Quentin Dupieux | France | 2022 | 1h 17m | French w/ English subtitles | Starring Gilles Lellouch, Vincent Lacoste, Anaïs Demoustier, Jean-Pascal Zadi, Oulaya Amamra

In the aftermath of a ferocious showdown with a colossal malevolent turtle, a team of five superheroes known as the Tobacco Force are compelled to take mandatory leave. However, the retreat takes an unexpected turn when a sinister figure named Lézardin, the Emperor of Evil, sets his sights on obliterating planet Earth. French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux (Deerskin, Rubber) brings his signature absurdist comedy to this brilliantly offbeat satire of the superhero genre.

Reviews

‘Unpredictable, digressive, looping and parenthetical in structure, Smoking Causes Coughing is one of the most formally daring and unexpected films of the year.’
★★★★
Wendy Ide, The Observer

‘Tongues are firmly in cheeks throughout, and Adèle Exarchopoulos steals the movie as a cheery smartphone addict who keeps vlogging into the digital abyss, even as she’s being pursued by a murderer.’
★★★★
Kevin Maher, The Times
