The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry12A

Directed by Hettie Macdonald | UK | 2023 | 1h 48m | Starring Jim Broadbent, Penelope Wilton, Maanuv Thiara, Monika Gossmann, Nina Singh

In south Devon, a seemingly unremarkable man in his sixties one day learns an old friend is dying and decides to get in touch. He walks to his local post office to send a letter, and out of the blue, decides to keep walking – all the way to her hospice, 450 miles away in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton star in this poignant adaptation of Rachel Joyce’s best-selling, award-winning novel of 2012.

Reviews

‘It is immediately one of the great movies about ageing and regret, up there with 45 Years and The Straight Story.’
★★★★
Kevin Maher, The Times

‘This politely unassuming little film builds into a wrenching examination of grief, guilt and eventual closure.’
★★★★
Wendy Ide, The Observer
