Directed by Oliver Hermanus | UK | 2022 | 1h 42m | Starring Bill Nighy, Aimee Lou Wood, Alex Sharp, Adrian Rawlins, Lia Williams

A straight-laced veteran of the civil service spends his days as a bureaucratic cog in the machine tasked with rebuilding Britain in wake of the Second World War. However, after receiving a stark medical diagnosis, he becomes determined to enjoy his remaining days and to make a mark on the world. Based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 masterpiece Ikiru, Oliver Hermanus’ poignant drama features gorgeous production and costume design as well as a graceful, master-class performance by Bill Nighy.

Reviews

‘Bill Nighy puts in a career-best performance in an emotionally searing redo of Kurosawa’s Ikiru…may well leave you a sobbing mess’
★★★★★
Phil de Semlyen, Time Out

‘Nighy is heartbreakingly shy and sensitive, his refined, almost birdlike profile presented to the camera in occasional stark and enigmatic closeups.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
