The Fly18

Directed by David Cronenberg | USA | 1986 | 1h 36m | Starring Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, John Getz, Joy Boushel

A brilliant scientist makes a technological breakthrough in teleportation and decides to test his new machine on himself. Unknown to him, a housefly slips in during the process, leading to a monstrous merger of man and insect. A masterpiece of practical effects, Cronenberg’s iconic body-horror offers up a gnarly indictment of scientific hubris as well as a metaphor for terminal illness and 1980s AIDS panic.

Screenings on Friday 26th and Wednesday 31st will include a short introduction by UPP projectionist Ash Verjee.

Reviews

‘Science fiction has rarely been this emotionally powerful or, ironically for a film with a mutant insect at its centre, so deeply human.’
★★★★★
Adam Smith, Empire Magazine

‘Only Cronenberg can get away with working out his raw phobias on screen while being poignantly witty and repulsively entertaining at the same time.’
★★★★
Alan Jones, Radio Times
