Wings of Desire12A

Directed by Wim Wenders | Germany | 1987 | 2h 7m | German w/ English subtitles | Starring Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, Peter Falk, Otto Sander

Two angels glide through the bustling streets of Berlin observing the lives of its residents without ever interacting with them. When one of the angels becomes mesmerised by a trapeze artist, he yearns to experience life in the physical world. Winner of the Best Director prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, Wim Wenders’ gorgeous city symphony is a poignant ode to Cold War-era Berlin and a ravishing exploration of what makes us human.

Reviews

★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘If some restorations of classic films are mere spit and polish, this one is spectacular: a deepening and sharpening of existing beauty.’
★★★★★
