Bergman Island15

Directed by Mia Hansen-Løve | France | 2021 | 1h 52m | Starring Vicky Krieps, Tim Roth, Mia Wasikowska, Anders Danielsen Lie

Two filmmakers take a couples retreat to Fårö island hoping to find inspiration where Swedish director Ingmar Bergman shot some of his most celebrated films. As the days pass, memories of past romances surface and the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur. Mia Hansen-Løve (Eden, Things to Come) explores the intersections between love, life, and movies in this melancholic and satisfyingly complex romantic drama.

Reviews

‘A meditation on modern relationships that hilariously deconstructs the canonisation of Ingmar Bergman. We would happily spend all summer with Mia.’
★★★★★
Lillian Crawford, Little White Lies.

‘Krieps, who’s phenomenal, has such a natural, lived-in rapport with Roth – the actor doing his best work in years here – that you start to feel the undercurrents in their relationship moving like water round your toes.’
★★★★★
Robbie Collin, The Telegraph
