The Quiet Girl12A

Directed by Colm Bairéad | Ireland | 2022 | 1h 35m | Irish Gaelic w/ English subtitles | Starring Catherine Clinch, Carrie Crowley, Andrew Bennett, Michael Patric

In 1980s Ireland, a quiet nine-year-old girl is sent to live on a farm with foster parents for the summer. After a short period of unease she begins to blossom in their care, however, she soon discovers that her foster parents have secrets of their own. Centred on a remarkable performance by its young star and adapted from Claire Keegan’s acclaimed short story, this poignant Irish-language film is a moving coming of age story and a beautiful portrait of rural life. Nominated for Best International Feature at this year’s Oscars.

Reviews

‘It’s one of the most exquisitely realised films of the year. There’s a kinship with Céline Sciamma’s Petite Maman in the crystalline delicacy of the storytelling.’
★★★★★
Wendy Ide, The Observer

‘An endlessly-empathetic and open exploration of grief that grows more loving with time.’
★★★★★
Alicia Haddick, Little White Lies
