The Big Lebowski18

Directed by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen | USA | 1997 | 1h 57m | Starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, David Huddleston, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid

LA slacker Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski gets mistaken for a millionaire by a group of hired goons claiming to be owed money. This simple misunderstanding leads to a series of strange events involving bowling, nihilists, and a missing toe in which “The Dude” is tasked with helping the Big Lebowski get his kidnapped wife back. With typically stunning visuals and sharp dialogue, the Coen Brothers deliver a stoner comedy for the ages – “Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, our opinion, man.”

Our screening on Friday 15 July will be introduced by comedian Isa Bonachera, part of the Oxford Comedy Festival.

Reviews

‘Twenty years on, the Coen brothers’ comic masterpiece is sleeker and sharper, with even more menace and mystery. One of a kind.’
