A small-time thief turns his back on a life of crime after he unexpectedly falls in love, but starting over isn’t as simple as it sounds. Ozu’s silent homage to American crime films is an unusually fast-paced and stylish noir replete with humour and emotional depth.

This screening will be accompanied by a specially composed live score is by musician Sylvia Hallett, who deploys electronics alongside traditional instruments, and traditional Benshi narration courtesy of actress and artist Tomoko Komura.

This event is a collaboration with TORCH as part of the Humanities Cultural Programme: Japan Season. Also as part of Japan 2021: Over 100 years of Japanese Cinema, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network. bfijapan.co.uk

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road.We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We only show a few adverts – less than most cinemas – and we only play a couple of trailers, so please don’t be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
